Professional experience

Tim joined The Nichols Group in July 2016. Nichols is an elite company of strategic change specialists with over four decades experience advised on large, iconic programmes, complex projects and major business change initiatives. We operate in a wide range of industries, especially infrastructure, energy, transport, natural resources, government, technology and financial services. Nichols vision is ‘creativity to inspire and change the world’ and our approach is based on working collaboratively with clients and developing bespoke and innovative solutions which best meet their specific needs.

Tim previously worked in the Cabinet Office as Head of Government Project Delivery Profession where he was responsible for growing people and organisational capability and transforming the development of project talent as a strategic asset across government. This included increasing the capability, career progression and confidence of 10,000+ members of the project delivery profession; supported the creation of high performing delivery teams and used data and applied knowledge to enable consistently better judgements.  Before that Tim was a Director at the National Audit Office which he joined in 1988 having previously worked in local government.  At the NAO Tim specialised in the examination of complex project delivery and defence acquisition issues and, at various times, was also responsible for its work on DEFRA, the Millennium Dome and foreign affairs. 

Tim is married to Kay, has two daughters and two dogs and is an avid West Ham United supporter.

Education & Memberships  

  • Tim has an Honours degree in History obtained at the University of London, 
  • He is an Honorary Fellow of the Association for Project Management, 
  • A Fellow of the International Centre for Complex Project Management, 
  • A member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and,  
  • In 2013, Tim was one of the first cohort to successfully pass through the Major Projects Leadership Academy. 
  • He was a member of the Advisory Council of the Royal United Services Institute for a decade and has had a wide variety of articles published in project management and defence journals and lectures on a range of courses
